Intra-Coastal Studies (ICS) will be conducting a two-month underwater archeological study of
Woodstock on the Pungo from June 19 th to August 1 st of 2023. The primary objectives of this
study are to survey and map what, if anything, remains of the original town while retrieving and
cataloging any artifacts that may be discovered. This information will be used to document and
add to the historical record of the town.

Woodstock on the Pungo has been called the Atlantis of North Carolina. Most of the town is
now underwater as the shoreline has eroded considerably since the early 1800s. This site has
been known to contain evidence of pre-historic Native American occupation in addition to
artifacts associated with the colonial settlement. Established in 1738, it was one of the earliest
settlements in the colony, having been founded only 26 years after the foundation of Bath, the
state’s oldest town. Prominent during the Revolutionary War era, Woodstock was once a busy,
thriving port and the seat of government of Hyde County making it one of the principal
settlements of colonial North Carolina. Now located in Beaufort County, Woodstock has born
witness to wars, hurricanes, fires and a rich cultural heritage of the inner banks of North
Carolina. Although the original settlement now rests beneath the waves of the Pungo River, the
current community continues to thrive as a small community providing new generations with
opportunities and memories of their own.

ICS will be utilizing advanced, submersible drones as the primary tools for the expedition. The
drones are capable of sonar mapping the river bed, excavating sediment and retrieving objects
while simultaneously providing the operators with live video feed and photography.

This project will also be utilizing several summer interns as part of ICS’s summer internship
program. ICS will be conducting an intern water safety and basic submersible drone operation
course from June 12-16, 2023 prior to the start of offshore operations.
